Ten Days in South Africa: Cape Town, the Winelands and Kruger

If I could give a first-time visitor to Africa only one country, it would be the one I grew up in. South Africa packs mountains, ocean, wine country and some of the continent's finest wildlife into a single trip, and ten days is a lovely length for it. Below is the sample shape we often start from, which we then reshape around you.

Why ten days works

Ten days lets you settle in rather than rush. You can spend several days in the Cape and the Winelands, then fly to the bush for a few nights of game drives. It is the sort of itinerary that leaves time for long lunches as well as early mornings.

A sample day-by-day shape

Days 1 to 4: Cape Town

  • Arrive and ease in. A first evening in Camps Bay or at the Waterfront, with Table Mountain behind you, sets the tone.
  • Take the cable car up Table Mountain (weather permitting), then explore the Bo-Kaap and the city's food scene.
  • Spend a day on the Cape Peninsula with Boulders Beach penguins, Kalk Bay and the dramatic coastal drive.
  • Leave space for a slow morning or a hike. Cape Town rewards unhurried days.

Days 5 to 6: The Cape Winelands

  • Stay in or near Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, with their oak-lined streets, historic estates and exceptional restaurants.
  • Visit a few small producers rather than many large ones, and let a local guide choose.
  • Between September and November, a detour to Hermanus for land-based whale watching is possible, since whales typically appear along the coast from roughly June to November.

Days 7 to 10: A private reserve near Kruger

  • Fly to the bushveld, where private reserves such as those bordering Kruger offer open vehicles, expert guides and trackers, and a good chance at lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
  • Plan three nights if you can. Two game drives a day, at dawn and late afternoon, is the rhythm that makes bush time magical.
  • Travel home from Johannesburg or fly back through Cape Town, depending on your route.

When to go

South Africa has two different peak seasons, because the Cape and the bush behave differently.

  • Cape Town: typically at its best from about November to March, with long, warm, dry days. Winter in the Cape, from June to August, is cooler and often wet.
  • Kruger and the bushveld: typically best from May to September, when the dry weather thins the vegetation and animals gather at water. Summer is hot, green and showery, with young animals but harder viewing.

A ten-day trip has to compromise a little, and that is fine. Our favorite windows are the shoulder months, around April to May and September to October, when the Cape is mild and the bush is dry or drying. Late March and early April can also work well. If you can only travel in the northern summer, the bush will be wonderful, and the Cape will be cooler and quieter. Our best time to visit guide gives a month-by-month view.

What makes it special

What I love about this route is the contrast. One morning you are standing above the city with the ocean on both sides, and a few days later you are tracking a leopard at dawn. In between there are wines that rival anywhere in the world and a food scene that surprises almost everyone.

It also suits many kinds of travelers:

  • First-timers, because the logistics are easy
  • Families, with the right lodges, since many reserves welcome children
  • Couples, for whom the mix of romance and wildlife is hard to beat
  • Repeat travelers who want to see a country properly

Cape Town and the Winelands are malaria-free, and many private reserves are low-risk, although we always confirm what applies to your dates and lodge. For vaccinations and prevention, please speak with your doctor or a travel clinic ahead of time.

Ways to extend

If you have more time, South Africa makes a wonderful start to a longer trip.

  • Victoria Falls: Add a few nights on the Zimbabwe or Zambia side to see one of the world's great waterfalls. Water levels vary with the season, and the falls are typically at their fullest around March to May.
  • Botswana: A flight north to the Okavango Delta or Chobe adds a very different, water-based safari. Our guide to choosing your first safari country explains how the two compare.
  • Mozambique: Finish with a few barefoot days on the white sand and turquoise water of Mozambique, ideal for diving and snorkeling. The dry season, roughly May to November, is generally the best time.
  • The Garden Route: If you prefer to stay in South Africa, a few extra days along the coast between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is a beautiful drive.

What we handle for you

Part of the pleasure of this route is how much we can do behind the scenes. We book the lodges, domestic flights and transfers, and choose guides we trust. Because we work with long-standing partners, we can often secure better rates or added touches than you would find booking directly, and there is no planning fee. You can read more about how it works or browse our FAQ.
